The Top 9 Yoga Poses for Kids

Updated: Sep 13, 2019

Yoga is so beneficial for children. I found this great resource from Go Go Yoga Kids on the best yoga poses for children:

Kids love learning new yoga poses (at any age!) and often get excited to add new ones to their repertoire. Since kids do not have the same retention and memory as adults, I have found it helpful to group the yoga poses together by a theme. This really gives children the opportunity to practice the yoga poses and remember them outside of class time.

The following nine yoga poses were selected for their health benefits in young growing bodies. They are wonderful for getting kids moving and active. Many of them have animal names so children are able to relate to the poses.

Child's pose: Outstretch your arms and bring your forehead to the floor. Breathe deeply in and out through your nose. This is a very centering and grounding pose.

Cat pose: Begin on your hands and knees in a table-top position. Tuck your chin and arch your back like a Halloween cat. Inhale through your nose and enjoy this stretch. On the exhale return to a neutral position.

Cow pose: This pose pairs together very well with Cat Pose. Begin on your hands and knees in table-top position, drop your belly, relax your spine, and look up!

Up Dog pose: Lie on your stomach. Place the palms of your hands next to your shoulders and look up. Slowly straighten your arms and open your chest. It is okay to keep arms bent as well. This is a wonderful pose for opening your heart.

Down Dog pose: Begin on all fours in a table-top position. Spread your fingers and press your palms flat onto the ground. Straighten your legs, and make an upside-down v shape. Relax your head and neck and look between your legs.

Boat pose: Balance on your bottom, and lift your straightened legs in front of you. Keep a tall pine and tighten your belly.

Mountain pose: Roll your shoulders back and down and stand up straight. Raise your arms and look between them. Be tall like a mountain! The children love when I try to blow them over to see how strong they are.

Tree pose: My sons favorite 😊 Stand up straight and tall like in Mountain pose. Look on the ground and find a spot that is not moving to focus on. Place your hands at heart center. Slowly bend your knee and place your foot on the inside of your other leg. Then you can raise your branches up in the air.
